Chirco
is building a Baja Bug! Many of the air - cooled VW
parts and procedures used can also be used on Dune Buggies,
Sand Rails. These pages feature links to the Chirco
online parts catalog.
Now
that we are starting to work on the interior,
we need to get the seat mounts ready. Through out this
project safety of the driver and passenger have always
been the primary concern. So the seats are welded to
the roll cage.
We
are going to use a set of Beard
Ultra Seats with adjustable head rests and
one driver side seat
slider. The passenger seat will not be able
to move. These seats are extremely comfortable
and will hold you in place while going over bumps.
Donnie also thinks they look cool.
We weld 1
1/2" pipes from the bottom side bar of the
roll cage to the center tunnel on both sides of
the car. Then small light
tabs were welded to the fronts bars and a
piece of flat strap was welded to the rear.
The
slider
is then attached to the bottom of the seat,
each side has two bolts holding them on.
The
slider
has a handle that sticks out of the front and
when pulled to the side, a spring releases the
locks and allows the seat
to move forward or back. The seat
is lowered on to the mounts to make sure we drilled
our holes in the right places.
We were off
just a smidge and had to make the holes larger.
On the passenger side we had to raise the mounts
up as high as the drivers seat
with the slider.
We used square tubing and angle iron welded in
to do this. The passenger seat
will be mounted in the farthest back position
and it will be stationary.
Getting the
seats
exactly parallel to each other was the biggest challenge.
But these bad boy's sure do sit nice and really
hold you in place. The tabs
for the seat
belts are already welded in. We are going to
use a 2
inch shoulder and 2 inch lab that takes three
mounting points. We welded one tab
behind each seat
on the bar that runs behind your shoulders and 2
at the base of each side of the seats.
