Chirco is building a Baja Bug! Many of the air - cooled VW parts and procedures used can also be used on Dune Buggies, Sand Rails. These pages feature links to the Chirco online parts catalog.

PART 2 - Stripping the Pan and Suspension

We are finally down to just a pan. Now we needed to figure out what modification we need to make to start setting the suspension and the pan for it's future. We have taken an electrical wire wheel to strip most of the junk off to bear metal. This is a very messy process and we are not allowed in the house until we strip down. I still need to take an air chisel and get the stock seat tracks out. The front seat mounts will come off the 6- point roll cage and attach to the center hump for strength.
The battery compartment has rust and so does the other side. The ball joint front clip needs to be cut off and a link pin front clip will be welded in so we can install a 5" wider Warrior front beam.
The old spring plates have to go since we are going to run much larger tires. They will be replaced with Sway-A-Way flush mount 21 3/4" spring plates (This will remove the extended torsion bar circled in red) and the torsion bar will need to be shorter. We think we will run 27mm Sway-A-Way Power Barz. (much stiffer than stock) We also had to cut off the top stock bump stump, this is because we are going to have shocks coming off boxed trailing arms that tie in the roll cage. This will give us enough clearance and still let us bolt the body on to the tower. I tried cutting the bump stop of with a saws all and gave up. I was able to get it off with a large 7" grinder. (I only have about a 3" wheel left) A cutting torch would of also worked but cuts need to be straight.
We could not believe how much junk could be stored inside the pivot bracket. Yuck! They have been cleaned and sanded down. The trailing arms are being boxed and having triple shock mounts welded on so they are big and beefy. The pivot bolts have been cleaned and sand blasted. (Don't lose these bolts or the washers, they are hard to find)
