Chirco is building a Baja Bug! Many of the air - cooled VW parts and procedures used can also be used on Dune Buggies, Sand Rails. These pages feature links to the Chirco online parts catalog.

PART 16- Installing the Aluminum Fuel Tank.

We wanted to have the fuel tank under the one piece front end. We had to put on the upper portion of the front fire wall. This was because of the rack & pinion steering.

We choose the 8 gallon  8x33" aluminum fuel tank for the car. The sheet metal on the top portion of the front fire wall is fairly thin and not strong enough to hold a fuel tank so we had to make a bracket to increase the strength by increase the volume of sheet metal that holds the tank in place. We also had to be careful to male sure that we had room for the fuel outlet at the bottom of the tank

Once the holes were drilled through the fire wall, we placed the piece of flat strap directly behind the tank bracket. We did a flex test and it really helped.
The tank was then placed in the tank straps and a brass 90 degree fitting was placed on the outlet spout.
We then put on our fuel shut off valve. We are still thinking of how we are going to connect the fuel line from the take to where it comes out of the front horn.
We can tackle this once the body is set back on the pan. We are still hoping to get this baby painted soon.
